Rapper Rakim to headline at House of Independents
Free after St Patrick's Day Parade show & Marshall Crenshaw on lineup
The Cookman Avenue House of Independents continues to bring national talent to the downtown corridor, announcing Tuesday that rapper Rakim has signed on for a July 9 concert featuring riffs from the celebrated Pain in Full album.
Released in 1987, the album was named the greatest hip hop album of all time by MTV in 2006.
Born William Michael Griffin, Jr, the East coast rapper was part of the duo Eric B. & Rakim. He was ranked #4 on MTV’s list of the Greatest MCs of All Time and in 2012, The Source named him the number one lyricist of all time.
Paid in Full “introduced a level of rhyme complexity and introspective narrative that was scarcely heard at the time— and, of course, came packing the tenacious beat productions of disc jockey Eric B,” House of Independents spokesman Adam Nelson said in a written statement. “From beginning to end Eric B.’s deft turntable scratches and Rakim’s insightful verses make for an experience that few other albums have matched.”
The House of Independents, located at 572 Cookman Avenue, is an adaptable performance space that not only showcases musical performance but also theatre, dance, film, comedy, and some oddities. The venue opened on a Tuesday night in late November with performances by Murphy’s Law and Fishbone.
Since then international punk entertainers Pussy Riot; spoken word artist, actor, and former punk rocker Henry Rollins; The Dictators’ Handsome Dick Montioba; and the improv sketch comedic troupe Upright Citizens Brigade have hit the stage.
Upcoming featured performances include this weekend’s post St. Patrick Day Parade free performance by Turtle Soup and the Souper Groove All-stars kicking off at 2 p.m. Sunday.
At 11:30 a.m. on March 19 The Harlem Gospel Choir will be the featured guests during a home-style southern brunch buffet.
Little people tribute band Mini Kiss; a Grandmaster’s Furious 5 featuring the Sugarhill Gang, Melle Mel and Scorpio; and the legendary Marshall Crenshaw are among the upcoming featured performances.
