Read Across America & Women’s History Month collide at Barack Obama
Pallone reads Grace to the Asbury Park school’s kindergartners
Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, would have turned 112 years old this week. Each year the nation celebrates his contributions to children’s literature with Red Across America. This week also marked the annual national recognition of Women’s History Month.
On Friday morning, Rep. Frank Pallone Jr, D-6th District joined in the annual celebrations by reading “Grace for President,” to Barack Obama Elementary kindergarteners.
“It’s so important that every child, no matter their gender, has the confidence to know that they can grow up to be a leader in today’s world,” Pallone said. “We have to ensure that both boys and girls can relate to and be inspired by the characters they are seeing in books and TV shows, and that these stories are sending a positive message to young people.
“Grace for President” is the story of a young girl who, stunned to discover that all U.S. presidents have been men, decides to kick off her own political career by running for president of her class. She faces off against a popular boy and wins in a surprising way.
“As we start Women’s History Month this March, I’m glad to be able to share one of those empowering stories with these kids who I know will be the leaders of the future,” Pallone said.
The book was made available via the Teach a Girl to Lead program, administered by The Center for American Women and Politics [CAWP], a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. The program was created to inspire girls and young women to follow in the footsteps of women leaders.
