Rebel Supply Co. moves in on Cookman Avenue
Saturday grand opening offers discount & chance to win $50 gift card
The new shop on the block is Rebel Supply Co. and with an edict of Life, Liberty and Affordable Fashion for all, this Cookman Avenue fashion hub offers new and recycled fashion, accessories, junk market finds and local art.
The brainchild of Sarah King, former owner of OG Surf and Skate, Rebel opened quietly on Nov. 28 but will celebrate its grand opening Saturday with a 10 percent discount on all new merchandise and a chance to win a $50 store gift card.
“When my husband [Robert Stumley] and I sold the Ocean Grove store three years ago I said I would never do this again,” the mother of two children ages 7 and 9 said. “Almost three years to the day I said I think I want to open another shop.”
When looking for that perfect retail spot, King and store manager Casey McDonald [both shown at right] stumbled upon the space inside the refurbished art deco building. Although the space was a bit larger than what King envisioned she said she couldn’t resist.
“I grew up in Greenwich Village so Asbury has always been a home away from home,” she said. “Asbury is on such a trajectory right now and I feel like, vibe wise, this store really fits in with the community.”
Rebel’s vibe is similar to that of Free People, Anthropologie or Urban Outfitters retail stores, King said.
“Just because things aren’t overpriced doesn’t mean that you have to shop in dump,” she said.
King brings together a Market Space, Consignment and traditional retail model under one roof.
“It’s an amazing business model,” the Wall resident said. “It keeps money within the community and we are able to offer affordable new clothing because we know consignment is not for everybody.”
The Market Space showcases local artisans’ wares for a $25 per square foot monthly rate.
“You set your own pricing,” King said. “We do all the work and you still get 100% of the selling price.”
And, consignment sales are split between the product’s owner and the shop, King said.
Rebel Supply Co. is located at 550 Cookman Avenue. The shop is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m, Fridays 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store is close Tuesday.
