Report: Ex-cops get probation for vandalizing complainant’s vehicles
Victim rejected restitution, sought jail time for defendants
Two former Asbury Park police officers each were sentenced Wednesday to one year on probation for vandalizing vehicles belonging to a citizen who filed complaints against them, according to a report in the Asbury Park Press.
Superior Court Judge Vincent N. Falcetano imposed the probationary terms on the former officers, Stephen M. Martinsen, 31, and Thomas A. Dowling, 27, the Asbury Park Press reported yesterday. The judge also ordered the former officers to undergo alcohol treatment and to split repayment of a total $1,712.66 for damages to the vehicles.
Both defendants brought cashier’s checks to court, payable to victim Ernest Mignoli, to cover the full amount of restitution, but Mignoli refused to accept the payment, according to the report. Mignoli also asked for jail time instead of probation for the ex-officers.
“We’re not asking for much — 30 days in jail,” said Mignoli. “How about five days in jail — something to send a message.”
