Ocean Grove is a photographer’s playground considering the overabundance of historic, Victorian era architecture on seemingly every corner. Helmetta, NJ resident Robin Dell Maccaro caught that essence perfectly with this shot of a row of gingerbread style homes.
“The picture of the roofline was taken in Ocean Grove in February 2012 on a very blustery, cold day during a Composition In the Field class, via the Digital Photography Academy,” said Maccaro. “The instructor walked us through Asbury Park and Ocean Grove giving tips and having us shoot away. We’d stopped on a residential street and I saw the tops of those three homes and the Three Bears came to mind. Baby, mama and poppa bear. The larger two had the additional peaks in contrast to the first simpler a-frame and it caught my eye. I tend to avoid wires unless I’m shooting them on purpose, never underestimate the beauty of electric poles and elements. However here they add extra depth to the shot leading the eye toward the ornamental awnings. When the instructor, who is a professional freelance photographer, really liked it, I felt I hit the composition jackpot with the angle I’d captured.”
“My love of photography is fueled by the fact that I see things as if they are framed through a cameras viewfinder,” said Maccaro. “(I) always have, especially the simplest of things. ‘Now THAT’s a picture’. So I take many. I use Facebook to show and store my work/albums and my friends are supportive and complimentary of my images. Someone told me recently my pictures bring them peace and that I make the ordinary extraordinary – doesn’t get any better than that.”
Maccaro is fascinated by the quaint setting and charm of Ocean Grove and Asbury Park’s historic, cool factor as she puts it, frequently walking the streets of both looking for her next bit of photographic inspiration.
“My rule is never leave my camera behind in either town because both are filled with photo opportunities waiting to happen at every turn.”
