The Asbury Park school district’s search for a high school principal will continue after the board of education voted not to hire the principal Superintendent Denise Lowe suggested.
Because the recommended principal was not approved, the job opening will be posted for an additional week.
Prior to the vote last Wednesday, the district posted advertisements for the job in The Newark Star-Ledger, The Asbury Park Press, njschooljobs.com, njhire.com, and its own website. They also sent information on the job opening to contacts from the New Jersey Principals and Supervisors Association, according to district community relations coordinator Chrissy Coloma. The job was posted for two weeks.
Current principal Mark Gerbino is moving to Thurgood Marshall Elementary School, Coloma said. The district is not at liberty to publicly discuss reasons behind the move because it is a personnel matter, she said.
After the first round of posting, there were 40 applicants for the position, Coloma said. Five met the district’s minimum qualifications. Three were askd to interview for the position and two candidates accepted the invitation to interview.
The district’s minimum qualifications were that candidates “hold a standard NJ Department of Education Principal Certificate; hold a master’s degree from an accredited college or university; have three or more years of proven experience as a principal at the secondary level in an urban environment, entrepreneurial school leadership, experience with demonstrated success driving high performance, raising student achievement, and improving under-performing student achievement,” according to Coloma.
Other minimum qualifications were experience building effective teams along with exceptional coaching skills, and experience with data analysis and portfolios.
