Senate honors Asbury Park Student Athletes
Beck: We are seeing real, measurable progress with our students
More accolades came for the Asbury Park Blue Bishops on Valentine’s Day.
Sen. Jennifer Beck [R-Monmouth] had the championship winning football and boys soccer teams honored on the Senate floor during Tuesday’s voting session.
Superintendent Lamont Repollet joined Soccer Coach Jean Dortissant, players Fenelson Eteinne and Widmaier Beaubrun, Football Coach Tim Fosque and players Namir Argilagos and Calvin Simmons-Carter in accepting the Senate Resolution from the Monmouth County Legislative Delegation.
“I was happy to have these outstanding young student athletes and their coaches honored by the Senate today in recognition of their athletic accomplishments as well as their academic achievement — many of these students significantly improved their literacy scores during the school year.” Beck said in a written statement.
The Asbury Park Boys Soccer Team won the NJSIAA Central Group I Sectional Title for the first time in 35 years this past fall. Dortissant noted they finished the season with a record of 18-4-1, the team’s first title since 1981.
And the Asbury Park High School Football Team was honored for winning the NJSIAA Central Group I Sectional Title this past season, their first since 2011 and the school’s seventh NJSIAA sectional title. Player Namir Argilagos will be attending Notre Dame on a full academic scholarship in the fall.
“Asbury Park has made great strides under the leadership of Dr. Lamont Repollet.” Beck said. “The new literacy program helped 68% of the students exceed reading growth targets established by the school. As noted, many of the Asbury Park student athletes have also performed above expectations in the literacy intervention program. We are seeing real, measurable progress with our students.”
The Asbury Park School District was designated a 2016 and 2017 Innovative District by the International Center for Leadership in Education. It was also recognized as one of the top three most rapidly improving districts in the nation. The District has partnered with Brookdale Community College and Monmouth County Vocational School District to expand its educational initiatives.
