Sensational Soul Cruisers headline at Springwood Park
Free Levitt AMP concert series adds Tuesday show
The Asbury Park Music Foundation has added a concert to their free weekly Levitt AMP Asbury Park Music Series.
Classic R&B dance band the Sensational Soul Cruisers will headline 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Springwood Park stage, organizers said.
Founded in 1992, the 11-member ensemble is known for their classic Philly and Memphis Soul sounds. Their old school renditions include the music that made Doo-Wop, Motown and Disco chart toppers. The band is comprised of former members of well-known R&B and smooth soul groups.
“In this much-needed time, it’s important to show unity in the community through a diverse group working together to create and play music that nurtures the heart and strengthens the soul,” said Screamin’ Steve Barlotta, Soul Cruisers’ band leader.
Barlotta, a Jersey Shore sax legend, has led the band for over 26 years. Today they perform over 200 shows a year, paying tribute to classic performers from Otis Redding and the Drifters and Earth, Wind, and Fire to Barry White and the Commodores and Chicago.
The free Springwood Park music series is funded in part through a $25,000 matching grant provided by the Levitt Foundation. Asbury Park is one of 15 communities awarded the grants aimed at transforming underused public spaces into thriving community destinations. The series is also supported by Interfaith Neighbors, Asbury Park Press, and New Jersey Natural Gas.
The 10-week concert series is held 6 p.m. Mondays at Springwood Park on Springwood Ave between Atkins and Union Aves. Free parking is available at the empty lot directly across the street from the park. In case of inclement weather, the concert is held inside the city’s Transportation Center, located at Main Street and Cookman Avenue.
Gary U.S. Bonds headlines the 6 p.m. Monday showcase and the Harlem Teens Choir will wrap the concert series at 6 p.m. Aug. 29.
