Shape Shop’s Boutique Fitness opens on Memorial Drive
Duo offers mix of blended fitness classes inspired by music
Landing in Asbury Park by way of New York City and California, music industry and dance professionals Christopher Goins and Barbara Serbes [shown below center], this week, opened Shape Shop Asbury Park, a boutique fitness studio in the newly renovated Shops at Sunset Point on Memorial Drive.
Also home of the Parkemoor high end furniture and soon to open home base for Booskerdoo Coffee & Bakery, the newly redeveloped 20,507 square foot shopping center is part of the city’s Urban Enterprise Zone.
In Shape Shop’s 1,000 square foot studio, Serbes and Goins provide a creative take on fitness, aiming to heighten physical and mental strength.
“Asbury Park is perfect for us,” Serbes, 40, said. “The music scene, the beach and the excitement of the new growth and opportunities in Asbury is cool to be a part of.”
Offering a mix of yoga, dance, Pilates and kickboxing based classes, the city residents place the accent on music. Goins uses alternative music to help motivate, create and foster positive energy, power and clarity, he said.
“The Shape Shop is a cool, creative, inviting, intimate studio space,’ Goins,45, said. “We want people to feel really at home here so they’ll want to come hang out, exercise and get in better mental and physical shape.”
Serbes is a New Egypt native who brings her fashion industry and dance experience to the collaboration with California native and music industry veteran Goins, known for is work with Daniel Ash [Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love And Rockets], Matthew Sweet, The Supersuckers and Tool.
Their unique approach to fitness includes a live classic rock guitar performance during the Saturday ‘Rock Your Asana’ yoga class. Also on the schedule are BROGA, a beginners yoga for men; Open Barre, a meeting of ballet, yoga and Pilates; and Salsa Power Party, a salsa dance toning class.
“We are thrilled to be a part of Asbury Park’s growing business community and look forward to sharing our love of fitness and music with the city,” Serbes said “As a businesswoman and lifelong wellness enthusiast who has dedicated decades to fitness, dance and entertainment, opening a fitness studio in a city with such creative change has been a lifelong dream.”
Shape Shop is located at 1321 Memorial Drive. Their hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 pm. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. They are closed on Sunday.
