Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts to close Lake Ave location
Plans to continue services and exhibits at other locations
The Shore Institute of the Contemporary Arts [SICA] will close the doors of its Asbury Park facility at the end of January, according to the president of its board of trustees.
“As of January 31, 2013, SICA will no longer continue to operate out of our existing facility on Lake and Cookman Avenues in Asbury Park,” wrote Fred Rafetto in an email to the Asbury Park Sun. “We do, however, hope to continue to offer exhibits and services at other off-site locations. Our members and the general public may check SICA’s website for updates after January 31.”
SICA moved to Asbury Park in 2011 from its original home — an industrial building that was once a canning factory in Long Branch. The organization, which is devoted to promoting and exhibiting modern art, first opened in 2004.
SICA’s exhibit space and cafe is in a 3,200 square foot space in downtown Asbury overlooking Wesley Lake. Its current exhibit is the 9th annual Juried Exhibition.
Under founder and executive director Douglas Ferrari, SICA also sponsored the Sculptoure public art exhibit, which installed various works of art in outdoor locations in Asbury Park and Long Branch.
In an article about the new location of the ShowRoom Cinema in downtown Asbury Park, the New York Times on Sunday cited SICA as one of the organizations helping to remake the arts scene in the city.
