Sierra Club promotes ‘Hands Across the Sand’ on May 18
'We want the Shore to be built sustainably'
Editor, the Asbury Park Sun:
Hard to imagine it has been six months since Superstorm Sandy ravaged our coast. After Superstorm Sandy we saw communities come together to help out their fellow neighbors and these communities are bouncing back stronger than ever. It takes all of us after a disaster to help and it is going to take all of us to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Boardwalks are being built and businesses are re-opening, but nothing is being done to lessen the effects of climate change. President Obama has come out stating that climate change is an issue that we must deal with, unlike Governor Christie who said people in Union Beach don’t give a damn about climate change. That is why we must come together on Saturday, May 18 for Hands Across the Sand to show Governor Christie we do care about climate change and President Obama we want action to be taken on it now.
We will be sending a message to both the Governor and the President that we want windmills off our coasts not oil rigs. We want the Shore to be built sustainably not have boardwalks like Avon by the Sea and Ortley Beach being built with rainforest wood. We showed we are Jersey Strong, but now we need to show we are Jersey Smart by putting in place policies that protect our coast, the environment, and lessen the affects of climate change.
In order for real change to happen people need come together and start getting involved. Climate change is one of the biggest challenges we are going to be facing, but the good news is there is technology and ideas out there that can help prevent another Sandy. By joining hands with us on Saturday, May 18 you will be sending a message that you do give a damn about climate change and want a clean energy future!
