With news that Asbury Park’s beaches will be staying open later to protect public safety, city resident Susan Ring brings us this shot of Asbury lifeguards on duty.
“I’ve lived all along the Jersey Shore (Spring Lake, Toms River, Bay Head, Point Pleasant Beach, Long Branch and Ocean Grove) to name a few,” says Ring. “Right before moving back to the shore, I lived in New Brunswick and still enjoy my drive to my office in Edison. I missed the smell of the ocean and the laid back nature of the area. So I moved back to the beach in 2008. I always remember growing up in beach towns that the lifeguards have always been the silent watchers of our waters.”
“On the day this picture was taken, I noticed the stand was painted in the old style and the flag blowing in the wind. It was taken the day after they had saved 3 of the 4 people on the beach, so I thought it was a moment to thank the guards who sit watching over us.”
