Six seek to fill three open seats on the BOE
Voters to cast ballots on school district spending plan
Six Board of Education candidates will vie for the three open seats on the school district’s governing body on April 19.
Incumbent Nicole Harris, the current school board president, is running alongside former school board member James Famularo and Derrick Grant, who ran as part of the A-Team for Council in the 2014 City Council election.
Former school board member Barbara Lesinski is running with incumbent board member Connie Breech and newcomer Dominic Latorraca, Director of Workforce Training at Brookdale Community College.
Incumbent Board member Corey Lowell, elected to office 2013, will not seek reelection.
The Board of Education voted 6-0 in January to move the election back to April.
School districts were first given the option to marry their elections with the November general election in 2012. Voters cast ballots for school board candidates and any proposed referendum or capital spending budget but there is no vote on the annual school budget.
With the shift back to April, voters will once again cast ballots on whether or not to approve the school district’s budget.
The Asbury Park School Board and District are striving to ‘Build a Brighter Future’ for our students,” Harris has said. “One of the things we are determined to do is be more transparent and to work cohesively. With this being one of our primary focuses, we decided to move the election from November to April to allow voters a chance to have a say on the school district’s budget.”
