Snow Moves Deal Lake Saturday Clean-up to April 14
Commission Chair Brockel: Storm left downed tree limbs but eagles return
The rain or shine Deal Lake Clean-up planned for Saturday has been postponed by the snow, Deal Lake Commission Chair Don Brockel said.
“Even though the snow will probably melt along the south side of the lake where we do the clean up, I had to make the call now,” he said of opting to move the annual spring cleanup to April 14. “It will still be pretty cold.”
Brockel said a cursory inspection of the 158-acre lake Thursday morning shows an abundance of downed tree limbs, mostly pines.
“But the eagles are back,” he said of a pair of bald eagles that moved into the area this past fall. “They were gone for about two weeks but they are back now.”
The biannual clean-ups rally area residents’ aid in removing debris and trash from the manmade lake’s shoreline.
This past fall over 120 people and 80 Monmouth University students removed over a 2,000 pounds of debris from six locations along the lake.
“Most likely it was closer to 4000 pounds with debris removal by lake shore owners and logs removal by the flume by Mr Todd Rush,” Brockel has said.
The newly scheduled April 14 spring clean-up will be immediately followed by the Annual Asbury Park Fishing Club’s Carp Contest, being held on April 22 to stay the proliferation of the freshwater fish.
