Spirit Cove Lands on Bond in the Health & Wellness District
New Age practices & products, home décor and clothing offered
New Age offerings have landed on Bond Street in the form of Spirit Cove, a retail shop where one can find an eclectic array of spiritual and inspirational products.
The shop is the latest addition to what has become the downtown business district’s health and wellness corridor. Within a one block radius are Dr. Pat Connolly’s Chiropractic office, Tao, Kur Wellness, The Daley Practice, and the recently opened Bond and Bangs Apothecary.
The wide glass fronted shop in the midst of Bangs and Summerfield avenues is owned by Deborah Simpson, a clairvoyant with a religious studies doctorate in theology, who is also an ordained minister, spiritualist, and published author and lyricist.
“This is our work of love,” Simpson said of what will now become her permanent home base. She is joined in the venture by her sister Maria Clark, who she teasingly refers to as her rock star/stoner.
Clark, like her sister, has a rare gift – specializing in the metaphysical properties of stones.
“Each stone has different vibrations and healing properties,” Clark said. “I try to match up whatever is going on with a person’s vibrations to a stone but really the stone picks you – you and the stone share a frequency.”
For example, a person plagued with depression may benefit from Lepidolite, a stone from which lithium medicines are derived. Those feeling a little fatigued could try quartz, an energy amplifier, Clark said.
For these New Brunswick natives, the practice in new age offerings is a lifelong passion.
Simpson began the practice of automatic writing at age nine, which led to her book of prophecy, published in 2008, and a handful of others ranging from Paranormal Prophecy [2012] to Ethereal Erotica [2011].
Clark said she began digging for stones as a child, not aware of her spiritual connection to minerals.
The two have run a weekend shop at Englishtown Flea Market on Route 33 for the past two years and their search for a year-round shop led them to Asbury.
“It started as an at the kitchen table over coffee discussion,” Clark said.
“Our client base kept telling us to go to Asbury,” Simpson said. “We searched for 6 months before we found the right location.”
The location comes with a friendliness in an established community that she appreciates, Simpson said.
“I love that I can walk out the door at 8 o’clock and ask someone where I can get a cup of coffee and they’ll point it out, or if my dollar isn’t working in the parking meter they’ll say ‘here take this one.”
Inside the mini market of spirituality one can find everything from inspirational and spiritual gifts to books, incense, smudge, tapestries, sage sticks and goat skinned Saka drums. There are essential oils, gemstones and crystals, homemade lotions and room sprays, dashikis and Mexican bajas, meditation products, and home décor items.
But at its foundation are the psychic, tarot, and astrological chart readings, wedding officiants, and soon to come workshops on everything from reiki and smudging to drum and full moon circles.
“We are not niched in any one religion or practice,” Simpson said. “We know what we are selling. We have the tools and will show you how to use them.”
Spirit Cove is located at 413 Bond Street. A grand opening ceremony is planned for March.
