Springwood Avenue Park takes top state honor
Parks & Rec Excellence in Design given to Suburban Consulting Engineers
The state’s Parks and Recreation Association awarded its Excellence in Design accolade to Suburban Consulting Engineers of Wall for its design of Asbury Park’s Springwood Avenue Park.
The design team captured the vision and project objectives that the City of Asbury Park and the Springwood Avenue Advisory Committee had for this unique and one-of- a-kind project, officials said in a written statement.
The project is one in a larger community revitalization plan. When it opened to the public in June 2016, it became the first park of its size to be built by the City on the westside since 1897.
“It’s an incredible honor to be chosen for this statewide award,” Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton said. “The park hasn’t even been open a year, and it’s already established as a gathering place, recreation area, and a beautiful asset to the neighborhood around it. The award is a tribute to the hard work and collaboration that made it all possible.”
Given on March 7 during their 42nd Annual Conference and Dinner, held at Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center in Atlantic City, the westside located park was chosen in part for its versatility, said Joseph Perello, Principal Vice President of Suburban Consulting Engineers.
“The appeal of this particular park is that there is something provided for all age groups, from playground equipment, to chess and checker game tables, to a space and stage for the performing arts, to a passive area with ornamental fountain to just sit and relax,” Perello said. “All of these elements make Springwood Avenue Park an extremely versatile public amenity, and our company is honored to be a part of this project with the City of Asbury Park.”
Since its June opening, the award-winning open space has provided not only a public gathering space for recreation but also a backdrop for the Asbury Park Music Foundation’s free summer concert series, and other social events, such as the End of Summer Camp celebration and as an exercise hub for members of the neighboring Senior Center who walk its pedestrian paths.
