Sunset Bridge will close for over a year at end of month
Two meetings scheduled to inform public of detours, schedule
A major overhaul of the Sunset Avenue bridge will start in late January, and county and transportation officials are set to hold two information sessions to keep citizens informed the day before closures will take place, according to a county news release.
The bridge [shown above], which links Asbury Park and Wanamassa, is more narrow than the roadway that approaches it, and the supports are in poor condition, City Engineer Joe Cunha previously told the Sun. The project has been a topic of discussion between the city and the county for over two years.
In cooperation with the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, county officials will host two public information meetings to inform local residents, officials, businesses and the general public about the bridge’s replacement.
Both sessions will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27. The first will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. in Asbury Park’s City Hall Council Chambers, located at One Municipal plaza. Following the Asbury Park session, the second session will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. in Ocean Township’s Public Meeting Room, located at 399 Monmouth Road in Oakhurst, at the corner of Deal and Monmouth roads.
The purpose of the meetings is to provide an open house opportunity to view information on construction staging, detours, and construction schedule, the release stated.
It is anticipated that the bridge will be closed and a detour in place on or about Jan. 28, 2015 until May 27, 2016.
The new bridge will be a four-span bridge compared to the current five spans and remain one lane in each direction. Shoulders and sidewalks on the bridge will be widened and the new bridge will be realigned with the road. The triangular curb between Bridge Avenue and Sunset Avenue will also be removed.
Staff will be on hand to answer questions. All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend either or both open house format meetings.
Questions during the construction phase should be directed to Denis Walsh, P.E., project engineer, 732-431-7760 or via email at Denis.Walsh@co.monmouth.nj.us.
