Sunset Lake Commission To Hold WTF Open Public Forum
City Council votes on pond management before 4 p.m. Sunday event at Hotel Tides
Tidal flow stagnation to the western most region of Sunset Lake led to an overabundance of algae and bad odors in recent years.
In August the Asbury Park City Council created an 11-member Sunset Lake Commission aimed at restoring the northeast water body back to its glory.
Headed by Councilwoman Eileen Chapman, the Commission will now hold its first public forum, entitled Sunset Lake WTF???? What’s The Future.
The open discussion forum will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hotel Tides, located at 408 Seventh Ave.
“It will be an opportunity for residents and visitors to have a meaningful dialogue about issues surrounding the Lake,” Commission member Randi Moore said in a written statement. “The Commission will also share the problems which they have uncovered as well as their short term, intermediate and long term goals for the lake.”
Moore said there will a chance for members of the community to become involved via the Friends of Sunset Lake.
“It is our hope that the Friends of Sunset Lake will be a vital and active partner in the restoration of Sunset Lake to its former stature as the centerpiece of the Asbury Park community,” he said.
In related news, the Asbury Park City Council will vote Wednesday on the appointment of a pond management service company. After vetting three bids, the recommendation was made in conjunction with Commission.
The City Council will vote to appoint Trenton-based Black Lagoon Pond Management at an annual rate of $8,200 for seasonal herbicide application, with three applications at a cost not to exceed $750 and $250 in permit fees.
Capabianco also said that the current footbridge restoration is on schedule.
Closed since sustaining structural damage during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, the bridge connects Emory Street between Sunset and Fifth avenues. A FEMA grant was awarded for the bridge’s full replacement and repairs to parts of its lake boundary areas. The work is expected to be completed by month’s end.
