Surfrider Foundation’s Family Fun Day Returns Saturday
Noon to 5 pm free event includes food, surf lessons, beach volleyball, a scavenger hunt, live music, & a beach clean-up
The 13th Annual Surfrider Foundation: Jersey Shore Chapter Family Day on the beach in Asbury Park returns Saturday.
The free noon to 5 pm beach day features food, surf lessons, beach volleyball, a scavenger hunt, live music from Stringbean Blues, and a beach clean-up aimed at sharing the importance of coastal preservation, said Mike Castellano, chair of the local chapter.
Surfrider Foundation has been hosting Asbury Park Family Day at the North Beach at Eighth Avenue since 2003 as a way to bring kids to the beach who typically do not have the opportunity to do so, even in their own town, organizers said.
“This section of the beach is very important to Surfrider because we fought to allow surfing here in the 1990s,” Castellano said in a written statement. “Currently, we are fighting to maximize access to our area’s beaches and to minimize plastic pollution, especially from single-use plastics. To that end, we collaborated with Asbury Park’s City Council to ban single-use plastic bags in the city and place a fee on paper and reusable bags. The ordinance passed June 2019 and the ban will go into effect January 1, 2020. We are hoping that Family Day will bring people together to enjoy the natural resources that we value so much.”
Free transportation will be provided at 11:30 am from the Boys and Girls Club [1201 Monroe Ave]; Mercy Center [1106 Main St]; and the West Side Community Center [115 Dewitt Ave]. A rain date is set for the same time Sunday, July 14.
The event is sponsored through support from the Asbury Park Mayor’s Wellness Committee, Summertime Surf, Philly Surf Crew, Christian Surfers of Manasquan, Asbury Park Department of Public Works [Recycling], Quick Med Pharmacy, Luigi’s Pizza, Jones Bar, The Chat and Nibble, Frank’s Deli, Langosta Lounge, Wegman’s [Ocean Twp], and Dean’s Natural Food Market.
