Surfside Food Drive to bring music, movies to boardwalk
Nonprofit to seek nonperishables Labor Day weekend
National nonprofit Move for Hunger is holding its fourth annual Surfside Food Drive and Concert Series to benefit the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean counties next weekend.
From Sept. 1 to 3, area residents and beachgoers are urged to bring non-perishable food items to the Move for Hunger tent on the Fourth Avenue boardwalk. Donation points have also been set up throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties at various beach clubs and businesses.
In addition to collecting cans, Move for Hunger offers a movie night with a screening of “Madagascar” at 8 p.m. on Sept. 1. Also, the second annual Surfside Cornhole Tournament will take place at Porta National Park on Sept. 2, and there will be daily performances by local artists on the boardwalk.
“The Surfside Food Drive is a great way for summer residents to clear out the kitchensand pantries of seasonal properties while making a difference for the less fortunate on the Jersey Shore,” said Adam Lowy, executive director of Move for Hunger, in a prepared release.
Scheduled for performances are E Street Shuffle, Quincy Mumford and the Reason Why, Matt Wade, the Amboys and more.
Move for Hunger has partnered with more than 20 beach clubs from Rumson to Normandy Beach to collect nonperishable food items. Collection boxes were placed at beach clubs and businesses on Aug. 15.
Participating locations in the Asbury Park area include Allenhurst Beach Club; Serpico’s Pizza and Restaurant in Allenhurst; Loch Arbour Beach Club; Langosta Lounge; Tim McLoone’s Supper Club; and the Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association.
