Talula’s, Langosta participate in ‘Eat Drink Local Week’
Goal is to bring awareness to New Jersey agriculture
Two popular Asbury Park eateries will be among the over 50 restaurants statewide participating in “Eat Drink Local Week” from June 20-27, an effort to highlight the importance of New Jersey farmers and agriculture to both restaurants and the state’s economy.
Talula’s on Cookman Avenue and Langosta Lounge on the boardwalk will be offering prix fixe dinners and ala carte specials in furtherance of the week’s goal to promote awareness of local agriculture. [They still will have the rest of their menu.] As an example of the locally-sourced offerings, the restaurants will both be featuring 40 North Oysters out of Ocean County in their selections, as well as other items showcasing the best of the state’s agriculture.
“The fourth annual ‘Eat Drink Local Week’ will not only provide diners with flavorful, fresh-from-the-field dishes, but a chance to support New Jersey farmers and to help bring awareness to the importance of New Jersey’s agriculture to our wellbeing and our economy,” according to a news release from event co-sponsors Edibible Jersey magazine and Zone 7, a fresh-from-the-farm distribution service that connects local farmers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey with restaurants.
According to New Jersey’s Department of Agriculture, New Jersey is home to more than 9,000 farms covering 715,057 acres of farmland, the release stated. The state is among the national leaders in many forms of agricultural production: fifth in blueberry production, third in cranberry production, third in spinach, third in bell peppers and fourth in peach production. The state also produces an abundance of tomatoes, corn, apples, strawberries, potatoes, hay, soybeans and nursery stock.
Agriculture is New Jersey’s third largest industry behind pharmaceuticals and tourism, bringing in billions of dollars in revenue to the state, according to the release. However, the latest census shows that farms are continually decreasing in numbers.
As for the Asbury restaurants participating in “Eat Drink Local Week,” Talula’s [owners Steve Mignogna and Shanti Church at top] will be offering a prix fixe for $75 and Langosta [owners Marilyn Schlossbach and Scott Szegeski above right] will have a prix fixe during the week for $35, and the menu items will be available as specials during the weekend.
Talula’s also will be hosting a reservation-only farm dinner with Meg Paska from Seven Arrows East Farm and Matt Gregg from Forty North oysters on Monday, June 22. Contact the restaurant for reservations.
