Tax assessor Mary Lou Hartman celebrates her last day of work today after working for the city for 25 years.
“She has served the city for 25 years and she really knows her craft and her profession,” city manager Terence Reidy said.
Hartman is currently the senior tax assessor in Monmouth County, Reidy said, having had a longer tenure than anyone else with her position in the county.
The city tax assessor maintains the list of the assessed values on each property in town; coordinates tax appeals and helps oversee the revaluation process.
“Mary Lou Hartman is a very strong, independent personality and loves what she does,” Reidy said. “She really takes her work to heart. I really do with her well in her retirement. She certainly deserves it.”
The city has been interviewing candidates to replace Hartman for the last three weeks, Reidy said.
A crowning achievement of Hartman’s career was the recent establishment of an up-to-date tax map of the city.
“Mary Lou has been all over it,” Reidy said. “She told me she’s happy to be able to leave the city and retire with a really, really good, up-to-date, up-to-the-minute tax map being done. She’s proud of that and I’m very pleased with it.”
Hartman could not be reached for comment.
