Test lights with sound, LED screen installed on boardwalk
Three lamps set up near Splash Park
Three new street lamps were installed on the boardwalk on a trial basis last Wednesday by the city’s department of public works [DPW] employees.
The black decorative street lamps have sound systems to play music, and one has an LED screen that can display messages or advertisements. The three test lights were donated by Amerlux lighting system, said city engineer Joe Cunha. The test period will be at least one month for the light with the LED screen and at least four months for the two other lights.
The test lights are located just south of the spray park, Cunha said, and the DPW may move the Asbury Angels benches to that area to align the two programs. The three standard silver cobra-head lights they replaced are in storage.
Amerlux lighting company provided the three test lights free of charge. Boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette would pay for any lights they decide to purchase through bidding.
The lights are controlled wirelessly, so the police department “can tie in and set off emergency lighting,” Cunha said at the Aug. 1 council meeting when the program was presented. It is also possible to install cameras in the lights. The lights also have colors that can function decoratively. They are built to withstand heavy weather.
