Magazine: This colorful property is Jersey’s hot new gathering spot
Travel + Leisure has named The Asbury one of the best new hotel across the continental United States.
This year 44 new hotels and resorts across the globe were vetted for everything from design and culinary offerings to just being an unbeatable location.
Their 2017 It List covers 31 countries and six continents, according to the website. In vetting 11 Us and Canadian venues, The Asbury topped the list, beating out The Beekman in NYC, The Dewberry in Charleston, The Four Seasons Resort in Lanai, Montage Palmetto Bluff in in Bluffton SC, The Pontchartrain in New Orleans, The Robey in Chicago, the Single Thread Inn of Healdsburg, Calif., Surf Jack Hotel and Swim Club in Honolulu, 21c Museum Hotel in Oklahoma City, and the Viceroy L’Ermitage of Beverly Hills.
This is the latest accolade for the Fifth Avenue hotel and entertainment venue which opened Memorial Day weekend. Last month, The Asbury topped the USA Today 10Best Hotel Opening’s list.
Envisioned as a social hub, The Asbury boasts 110 boutique hotel rooms, rooftop lounges showcasing a panoramic view of the city and shore line, a pool area, and outdoor beer garden.
There is also an indoor/outdoor event space, and the recent addition of a gallery space featuring the works of famed music industry photographer Danny Clinch and the vintage offerings by Tina Kerekes.
Its overall design and creative development was handled by Anda Andrei of the firm Anda Andrei Design in Manhattan. Andrei is well-known in the hospitality industry for her work with hotelier Ian Schrager.
Paul Taylor of Stonewall and Taylor in New York was the architect responsible for transforming the long vacant Salvation Army space, and hotelier David Bowd and his management company Salt Hotels is the operator. Bowd, who formerly worked with Schrager and Andre Balazs, administered a six week hotel industry seminar to area residents. He hired 90 percent of the over 100 graduates to fill positions.
The city itself topped Travel + Leisure’s Best Places to Visit in 2016 list.
“These are the places that are changing the travel map, whether it’s Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for its emerging arts culture or the idyllic Panamanian archipelago of Bocas del Toro with nine islands and hundreds of cays and islets,” magazine spokesperson Tess Povar said at the time.
