The Boss is back w/ a behind the scenes look at ‘The River’
'The Ties That Bind' documentary debuts Nov 27 on HBO
Bruce Springsteen fans get ready.
HBO has announced “The Ties That Bind – an inside look at the creation of Bruce Springsteen’s groundbreaking album The River” will debut Nov. 27.
The 1980 double album is said to have dramatically raised The Boss’ profile around the world, according to a news release from the cable station.
The documentary takes an inside look at the album’s creation through Springsteen’s first-person take on his writing process, the origins of key tracks and how they were developed from notebook pages to the studio and stage.
Filmmaker Thom Zimny weaves previously unreleased footage from The River tour and acoustic versions of defining tracks like “The River,” including “Two Hearts,” “The River,” “Independence Day,” “Hungry Heart,” “Point Blank” and “Wreck on the Highway.”
Musical showcases include rehearsal clips from Sept. 1980 and live performances from the Nov. 5, 1980 Arizona State University show in Tempe Ariz. There are more than 100 recently unearthed photos of Springsteen and The E Street Band during recording sessions for “The River.” The film also features previously unheard demos and outtakes from the 14-month recording process, including “Stray Bullet,” “Chain Lightning,” “The Time That Never Was,” “Cindy” and “Take ’Em as They Come.”
When “The River” was released Oct. 17, 1980, Rolling Stone called it “a rock and roll milestone,” and an “epic exploration of the second acts of American lives.” The album was included on the magazine’s list of the greatest albums of all time.
HBO documentaries on Bruce Springsteen include 2010’s “The Promise: The Making of ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’” and 2014’s “High Hopes,” chronicling the making of his 18th studio album, both directed by Zimny. “The Ties That Bind” is directed and produced by Zimny, with Bruce Springsteen serving as executive producer alongside Jon Landau and Barbara Carr.
