The Doors’ John Densmore Signs On To APMFF Appearance
Rock n Roll Hall of Famer Joins Panel Discussion At Break On Thru Screening
The star-studded list of those participating in this year’s Asbury Park Music & Film Festival (APMFF) being held in April continues to grow.
Most recently, The Doors’ drummer John Densmore has been added to the line-up, organizers announced this week.
Densmore will take part in a panel discussion following the world premiere of Break On Thru: A Celebration of Ray Manzarek and The Doors, scheduled for 12:45 p.m. April 28th at the House of Independents on Cookman Avenue.
Densmore, who appeared on every Doors recording, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. He won a Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY® Award that year and has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 1990, Densmore wrote ‘Riders On The Storm: My Life With Jim Morrison and The Doors,’ which landed on the New York Times Bestseller list.
“I’m very excited to return to the land of Bruce, where The Doors played in the early days,” Densmore said in a written statement. “I’m also very excited and proud of the film tribute to Ray that is world premiering at the festival.”
Densmore will be joined by the film’s director Justin Kreutzmann and Doors manager Jeff Jampol for an in-depth discussion about the making of the documentary and the history of the band.
“As a Doors fan, it was a thrill when Ray Manzarek came to Bob Weir’s TRI Studios, where I worked, for a live webcast,” Kreutzmann said. “Collaborating with Robby Krieger and John Densmore, along with everyone at Jampol Artist Management, has been an amazing experience. Interestingly enough, the film contains footage from 50 years ago when The Doors played Asbury Park’s Convention Hall. So it’s very appropriate that the world premiere will take place at this year’s Asbury Park Music & Film Festival. This movie is a tribute to Ray and The Doors, and one that Doors fans will love…because it was made by one.”
Densmore is the latest addition to a powerful APMFF content line-up that features An Evening with Danny DeVito, billed as an intimate evening at the Paramount Theatre on April 28. The evening features video vignettes and stories from DeVito’s career, integrated with discussion, a Q&A session and other special presentations.
Musical performances set to highlight the APMFF include Sublime with Rome at Convention Hall and Wyclef Jean at the Stone Pony on April 28; Gov’t Mule at the Paramount Theatre on April 29; and Michael Franti at the Paramount Theatre on April 27. Franti’s performance will follow the world premiere screening and panel discussion on his documentary Stay Human.
Additional performances and films include Built to Spill, North Mississippi Allstars, Low Cut Connie, Bobby Bandiera and Friends, Patrick Davis and His Midnight Choir, Battery Electric, the Kitchen Dwellers, Dark City Strings, Dentist, Beams, Sharkmuffin and the Tangiers Blues Band, who will serve as the opener for Gov’t Mule.
The APMFF also includes Dylan Archives III, a series of rare gems from the vault, along with the film Long Strange Trip, which also will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with the film’s producers Eric Eisner and Justin Kreutzmann.
