The neon “Bar” sign hanging outside The Press Room at 610 Bangs Avenue has become a beacon of sorts for this street’s recent creative renaissance.
The New York Times says in today’s travel section, “The last 18 months have been particularly transformative for one formerly forlorn area. Enlivened by a group of entrepreneurs mostly in their late 20s and early 30s, Bangs Avenue has become a hip extension of Asbury Park’s robust cultural and culinary scene.” Click here for more on the Times article, including a link to it.
And speaking of one of Bangs Ave.’s local entrepreneurs, Beach Cruiser Media (located inside the M Space on Bangs Avenue) owner Billy Mecca captured this shot of the “Bar” sign just after it was installed earlier this year.
Mecca tells Asbury Park Sun, “This photo of the sign was taken when it first went up. The Press Room has brought such great people and energy to our block. It was welcoming to see the glowing retro sign lit up on a block that had been dark for some time.”
Mecca is currently in the process of launching the Gay Asbury Guide — the GAG — later this summer. Visit his websites at beachcruisermag.com and gayasburyguide.com.
