THE SAINT HOSTS STANDING ROCK BENEFIT CONCERT 7 P.M. MONDAY
Social Justice Movement in Support of Protecting Native American Land
A group of musicians will come together 7 p.m. Monday at The Saint [601 Main Street] in support of the Sacred Stone of Standing Rock protest against the 1,170-mile crude oil pipeline near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota.
Led by the Standing Rock Sioux, Native American tribes have been joined forces to protect sacred land and express their fears of the pollution of the Missouri River, the tribe’s primary source of drinking water.
The protest has drawn national attention but according to a New York Times Saturday report federal officials plan to close access to a campsite where demonstrators have been protesting the construction. They cite public safety concerns.
“Sacred Stone of Standing Rock is in desperate need of power to keep communication alive,” event organizers said in a written statement. “To answer the call, Matt Brown of Homeless Apians/Sunlab Studios built a solar power charging station that will be transported to Standing Rock with Alan Smith of the Porchistas in early December.”
The solar power charging station will be a powerful and sustainable device to charge cell phones and laptops, thereby establishing access to emergency medical services, their family and friends, and increase social media visibility in order to collect necessary supplies, according to the AP Educational Justice Collective headed by Derek Minno-Bloom.
To date, the most needed supplies are Wool blankets, small portable wood stoves, and hot water thermoses. Donation transport and delivery will be fully documented and posted via social media by Brown and Smith, organizers said.
Tickets to the benefit concert are $10 and more information is available via www.thesaintnj.com. Donations can be organized via mattbrown.rickmo@gmail.com.
