The ShowRoom Screens 50th Anniversary Monterey Pop film
Pennebaker's Remastered Documentary runs 10 pm Saturday & 7:30 pm Sunday in Asbury Park
Fifty years ago a group of musicians redefined rock at one of those rare moments in history – The Monterey International Pop Festival.
It was beautiful June weekend at the height of the Summer of Love and the festival drew crowds of 25,000-90,000 over the course of three days for a lineup of rock, pop, folk, blues, folk, hard rock and psychedelic styles.
Those who attended witnessed immortalizing moments that have become legend, including Pete Townshend destroying his guitar and Jimi Hendrix burning his.
At 10 p.m. Saturday and 7:30 p.m. Sunday The ShowRoom Cinema will screen D. A. Pennebaker’s newly remastered Criterion Collection documentary.
“We’re very pleased to be one of the select theaters that is screening this special anniversary re-release of this landmark film,” said Nancy Sabino, co founder of the independent cinema.
With his characteristic vérité style, Pennebaker captured the career launching performances by Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, and Ravi Shankar. There are vignettes of Simon and Garfunkel, The Grateful Dead, The Mamas and the Papas, The Who, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, and Hugh Masekela.
The ShowRoom Cinema is located at 707 Cookman Ave. Tickets are $10, available on their website as well as at the box office.
