The Sun’s city council preview: July 11, 2012
Bathing suits on boardwalk, beach safety on agenda
The Asbury Park City Council is meeting tonight at City Hall. Their closed executive session is held at 5 p.m., while the workshop and regular sessions are at 6 and 7 p.m., respectively.
Items on the workshop agenda include:
• A beach safety presentation from city manager Terence Reidy, head lifeguard Joe Bonjavani and Garrett Giberson. A new program may be implemented in response to a recent death at the Second Avenue beach.
• Discussion of the ordinance prohibiting bathing attire on the boardwalk. This ordinance, enacted in 1958, caused a stir when a resident brought it to the council’s attention at the June 27 meeting. The ordinance has not been enforced in recent memory, and likely will not be, city manager Terence Reidy has said.
• A presentation from city redevelopment and planning director Don Sammet on allowing a recording studio at 625 Bangs Ave. The central business district [CBD] redevelopment plan must be amended for the studio to be a permitted use. This item has already been presented to the planning board, which is recommending the council approve the ordinance.
• A proposal from Bond Street Bar to expand into the building’s second floor. This is currently not allowed under CBD plan and zoning regulations, and would need a CBD amendment to come to fruition. The business’s owners will also be required to present this to the planning board.
• A presentation from Jackie Pappas from the Chamber of Commerce on a new wayfinding signage program at the Transportation Center.
• A presentation on Springwood Avenue lighting from city engineer Joe Cunha.
Items on the regular meeting agenda include:
• The establishment of a community development initiative program.
• A resolution establishing a foot patrol agreement between the city and the school district. The council has discussed this in closed session at recent meetings.
Items on the closed session agenda include:
• The memorial bench agreement with the Chamber of Commerce.
• An update from Sammet regarding possible changes to the waterfront redevelopment agreement [WRA] due to some properties being removed from Asbury Partners’ property acquisition list. Redeveloper Asbury Partners is expected next week to provide the city with a list of properties they are no longer interested in acquiring. In closed session, officials will discuss how and if the WRA needs to change due to the list, Sammet said.
• A discussion on correcting a deed in the Wesley Grove section of the waterfront redevelopment area.
