The Sun’s City Council preview — May 7, 2014
On agenda: Vote scheduled on Hovnanian project, city website redesign
The Asbury Park City Council is scheduled to meet Wednesday in council chambers at City Hall. A closed executive session will start at 5 p.m., followed by a workshop session at 6 p.m. and a regular council meeting at 7 p.m.
Public participation takes place at the beginning of the regular meeting. Items on the agenda for both the workshop and regular meeting sessions include:
• The city council is scheduled to vote on a K. Hovnanian townhome development project called “South Grand” that proposes 28 units constructed in the western waterfront redevelopment zone. If it passes, the project moves to the city planning board for further approvals. Click here to see previous Sun stories on the”South Grand” project.
• A presentation by Tom Gilmour, the city’s director of economic development, on the selection of a company to redesign the City of Asbury Park website.
• Presentations by Donald Sammet, the city’s director of planning and redevelopment, on canopies for the proposed Taka restaurant that encroach on the city’s right of way, and a redevelopment agreement for the Savoy Theatre.
• A proposal by Jackie Pappas, executive director of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce, for directional signage in the transportation center.
• Discussions on multiple special event applications, including a block party at the Asbury Park unit of the Boys and Girls Club, several competitive races and sporting events, summer carnivals, community health and youth-related events, and the Asbury Fresh market.
• Two proclamations, one recognizing the Central Jersey Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs and acknowledging May 17, 2014 as Arbor Day.
• Several resolutions, including a contract finalizing the agreement with Skate and Surf Festival, LLC.; one that authorizes the rental of beach umbrellas and chairs on Asbury Park beaches; allocation of funds to produce the 2014 Asbury Park Visitor’s Guide; purchase of a new street sweeper; and authorization to settle a PILOT agreement with one of the city’s downtown developers.
• Several ordinances, including two that amend salaries for city personnel, and one that amends the scope of special duty assignments given to the city’s police and fire personnel.
In executive session, the council will discuss the protection of public safety with Asbury Park Police Chief Mark Kinmon, the tax assessor’s position, an agreement with Madison Marquette regarding a state mandated sprinkler system and waterfront parking lots; an issue with payments in lieu of taxes on the Steinbach’s building; contract negotiations for the Skate and Surf Festival; and the potential sale of the Park Avenue Firehouse to the Asbury Park Board of Education.
