The Sun’s City Council preview — Wednesday, May 2, 2012
Bamboozle public awareness meetings, dogs on boardwalk, charter study commission, proposed downtown vintage car garage and smoke free recreation areas up for discussion
The Asbury Park city council will meet tomorrow in council chambers, with a workshop session at 6 p.m. and a regular meeting at 7 p.m.
Items on the agenda include:
• Scheduling a series of public awareness meetings for the Bamboozle music festival, slated for May 18 through 20. The festival is expected to bring more than 100,000 people to the city over the course of the weekend. City officials and event organizers from LiveNation have decided to hold public awareness meetings to keep residents apprised of how the festival will affect them. In tomorrow night’s workshop meeting, the council will discuss when to hold those meetings. Later in the meeting, the city is also reviewing ordinance waivers for issues such as drinking on the beach during the festival. Also during the 5 p.m. private executive session, representatives from LiveNation will present their final plans to the city for the festival which involve contract negotiations.
• An ordinance regarding beach and boardwalk access for dogs. The council is slated to introduce this ordinance during the regular meeting. For a previous story on the proposed ordinance, click here. The council is also scheduled to discuss smoke-free recreation and public areas.
• A public hearing on the ordinance establishing a charter study commission [CSC]. A CSC would examine the city’s current form of government and determine if any changes should be made. Those changes would then be submitted for voter approval. The council introduced the ordinance after political activist Duanne Small filed a petition to change the form of government to a ward system with a directly elected mayor. The city found Small’s petition to be deficient and he is now taking legal action to place his change of government option on the ballot, instead of a CSC. The council will discuss this litigation in private, at their 5 p.m. executive session. For a previous story on the CSC, click here. After the public hearing on the CSC ordinance, the council may vote on the issue.
• Art for the new beach badges. Dennis Carroll of ArtsCAP will present the designs for this year’s Asbury Park badge during the 6 p.m. workshop session.
• A presentation on new streetscape design elements in the waterfront redevelopment zone. City engineer Joe Cunha will present the plans, which include improved lighting and sidewalks.
• A public hearing on the ordinance allowing an antique car storage center and ancillary social club in the central business district, between Summerfield and Banges avenues. For more on those plans, click here.
• The Savoy Theater Redevelopment Project. Carter Sackman, the contract purchaser for the building that includes the vacant theater on Mattison Avenue, intends to reactivate the Savoy Theater inside. At the meeting, the council can begin the process of approvals by referring Sackman to the planning board for its recommendation.
