Valet Parking, Beach Smoking Ban, Boardwalk Upgrades, Green Team Formation, & Infrastructure Improvements On the List

It’s the start of the new year and the City of Asbury Park has its eyes fixed on a host of changes and improvements.

Beach Menu Items

At the top of the list is the annual beach improvement wish list, funded by boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette through a subsequent developer’s agreement. Put forth by Beach Utility Manager Garrett Giberson Sr, this year’s asks total $99.000 and includes:

Posting signs along the boardwalk that identify cross streets at a cost of $2,000.

Adding additional beach mats at a cost of $7,000.

Purchasing handicap beach chairs at a cost of $2,000.

Cigarette but holders at a cost of $2,000

15 trash and recycling containers at a cost of $42,000

Additional lockers at a cost of $16,000

Wi-Fi fees at a cost of $18,000

Bathroom maintenace at First and Fourth Avenue at a cost of $10,000

Banning Smoking on the Beach

City Manager Michael Capabianco said Wednesday they will begin vetting the possibility of banning smoking along its beaches. Smoking would be allowed along AP Boardwalk. Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn, in citing the fact that smoking is still legal, they consider designated areas like the Beach Bar, which permits smoking. Capabianco said they will looked to have a smoking ban in place by summer. 

Main Street Redevelopment

Also on the table are changes to the City’s Main Street Redevelopment zone. The City Council will vote on Feb. 28 on allowing recording studios and implementing metered parking and valet service in its municipal lots to help alleviate parking demands.

Green Team

The city is seeking volunteer members for its environmentally friendly group administered through its Sustainable New Jersey initiative.

Infrastructure Improvements

The City Council introduced a $3.8 million Capital Improvement Bond Ordinance to support infrastructure improvements and updates.

Historical Naming Of Streets

The City has introduced an ordinance that will rename its alleys after historical buildings. The initiative was sparked by a need to identify the ‘paper streets’ for mail delivery purposes. The roadways [shown at right] will be named:

Charms Lane

Albion Lane

Fisch’s Lane

Cuba Lane

Roseland Lane

Kershaw Lane

Mayfair Lane
