Homeless Count 2017
A tally of those without homes will be conducted on Jan. 25 across the state. The Point-In-Time count will be conducted for those who are sheltered and unsheltered in order to guide efforts to end homelessness.
Last year, the NJCounts found 8,941 homeless men, women and children across the state of New Jersey, a 12.4 percent decrease from 2015.
This year, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development [HUD] will use the count for tracking efforts with a particular focus on ending youth homelessness.
Factors that contribute to homeless families, youth and veterans include:
Shelters reporting lack of capacity to house homeless families throughout 2016; New Jersey state emergency assistance no longer reimburses shelters,
A shortage of rental housing driving up demand and costs,
Failure by Congress to increase funding for the federal Housing Choice Voucher program harming progress in creating affordable and supportive housing,
New Jersey continues to have a higher than national average rate of foreclosures; foreclosures cause many owners and renters to lose their homes, and
Too many jobs in New Jersey do not pay a living wage and those that do pay a living wage are leaving the state.
The counts are coordinated by Monarch Housing Associates and funded by New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency.
Polar Plunge In Support of Mary’s Place
The 9th Annual Rotary Club of Asbury Park Polar Plunge on January 28 will be held in support of Mary’s Place by the Sea and the Rotary’s Eye Rescue. Headquartered at the Berkeley Oceanfront Bar and Restaurant, the plunge will take place north of Convention Hall. The adult participation fee is $25 and registration will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and can be done online via www.rotarypolarplunge.org.
