Asbury Together launches, Farewell to Pappas, & Repollet to address homeowners

Asbury Park Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn and Councilwomen Yvonne Clayton and Eileen Chapman launched their Asbury Together campaign this week. The three incumbents will vie for the three open seats in the November 8 election, all for four year terms. Asbury Park holds non-partisan elections, where candidates do not run under political party banners. Instead, they can group themselves into tickets or run on their own. All the candidates appear on the ballot in one column.
Ocean Township Police issued an advisory Wednesday, warning residents to lock their cars. Officials said over the last month there have been a spate of unlocked car burglaries in numerous neighborhoods throughout the township. “All of these could have been prevented if motorists Close all of the vehicle’s windows, hid or removed visible valuables, and locked their cars, officials said.
In Asbury Park, the Community Action Network has organized a second Unity for the Community event Friday. A Community Prayer will held 6 p.m. at Springwood Park [located between Sylvan and Atkins avenues]. More than 100 people formed a circle in prayer during last month’s event.
Over at Anchor’s Bend [1300 Ocean Ave], Lost Boy, Corrina Corrina and Pop Empire headline Little Dickman Records’ free Fourth Anniversary showcase series. The Asbury Park-based independent record label, which formed in 2012, is inspired by a love of local music and fueled by a DIY work ethic. Their work to bring national attention to local music by distributing limited edition vinyl releases in record stores in the tristate area, and distributing digital downloads via www.littledickman.com and other music outlets like iTunes.
Homegrown punk, soul and rock band The F.L.O.W. [Following the Light Of the World] will be the featured performers at Monday’s free Levitt AMP Concert Series in Springwood Park. The F.L.O.W. features singer/songwriter Khadijah Mohammed, known for performances with Lenny Kravitz, Luther Vandross, P. Diddy, and The Dave Matthews Band. Parking is available on the lot across the street from the park. In case of inclement weather, the performance moves to the Asbury Park Transportation Center, adjacent to the Police Department on Main Street. Rain notices are posted by noon the day of the event on the Asbury Park Music Foundation Facebook page and on its website.
Paradise [at 101 Asbury Ave] celebrates the Material Girl with Nightschool, a retro themed event celebrating the music of Madonna. There will be no cover charge for the 9 p.m. Wednesday ‘It’s time to Celebrate and Have a Good time’ dance party with music by Steven Jay.
It’s time to bid a formal farewell to Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jackie Pappas, [shown below left] from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten [527 Lake Ave]. Pappas announced her move out of state earlier in the year and the event will serve as an opportunity for the community to farewell and wish she and finance Alan Wikander well.
Asbury Park Superintendent of Schools Lamont Repollet will be the featured speaker during the Asbury Park Homeowners Association 7 p.m. Tuesday meeting at the Bradley Elementary School [1100 3rd Ave]. Repollet [shown above right] is expected to give a presentation that will update the community on recent advances made by the district in support of its Building A Brighter Future mission.
Officials have announced that the Asbury Park City Council workshop and regularly scheduled meetings for Aug. 22 and 24 have been cancelled. The next regularly scheduled meetings will be held Sept. 12 and 14 in the City of Asbury Park Council Chamber [1 Municipal Plaza].
Brookdale Community College [765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft] will hold a free Paralegal Profession Information Session at 5 p.m. Aug. 24. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet with college faculty, ask questions about the paralegal field, participated in guided tours, and learn about Brookdale’s two-year associate degree program in paralegal studies and an accelerated training program for students who already have a college degree.
