Asbury Park middle schoolers celebrate accomplishments
'Faces of Black History' performs for tenth year at middle school
In honor of Black History Month, the top six students in each class at Asbury Park Middle School were treated to a live performance by Newark-based performance group Faces of Black History on Feb. 6, according to a news release from district spokesperson Chanta L. Jackson.
Faces of Black History is made up of performers Christopher Brasfield, Timotheus Peay, Stevanie Williams and Dionne Carole. The group strives to acknowledge the contributions of African-Americans though a live performance that salutes many well-known celebrities, personalities and history-makers in an entertaining and educational format.
From Negro Spirituals to Hip-Hop, the cast takes the audience on a 45-minute journey through African-American culture.
The group has been coming to the middle school for nearly 10 years, according to Principal Dr. Antonio Lewis.
“I felt special to be chosen to go,” said Jessica Gonzalez, an eighth-grader who has seen the performance for the past three years.
Eighth grade student Breasia Love, who aspires to be a writer, was motivated by the performance.
“I like how they explain how African-Americans in those days accomplished things,” Love said. “I really liked all of the dancing and singing.”
Additional activities are planned throughout the remainder of the month.
