Torre supports incumbents, Campbell, Quinn
'I believe dissention can bring forth creative solutions'
Editor, the Asbury Park Sun:
I have owned a business and lived in Asbury Park for many years and have had the pleasure of living with quite a few city councils since 1975. The current council is the first one in my history that has actually been able to make a noticeable improvement in the city. We have a vibrant boardwalk, a functioning downtown and the start of a Springwood Avenue revival. It is reassuring to me that they will stand up to the redevelopers and require them to follow the guidelines for the beachfront area but are also willing to work to make sure the development moves forward. I am pleased that they know that “private land” still has restrictions when it is obtained, in some cases by eminent domain, for a redevelopment created for the public good.
I have heard critics of the incumbents say that they did a great job but are not politically able to continue. Since when is being political a trait we want in our elected officials in Asbury Park? Political leaders in Asbury Park sold beds to the state agencies emptying out the mental institutions; took down historically significant buildings; sold our beautiful golf course on Old Corlies Road; and went to jail for a variety of extortion and bribery charges.
I have never liked the system that asks the voters to elect an entire new council every four years, nor have I been in favor of electing five people who all think alike. I believe dissention can bring forth creative solutions if you elect people who are willing to look and listen when making decisions, putting aside egos. So, in this election I support the incumbents, Kevin Sanders, John Loffredo and Sue Henderson and I support Myra Campbell and Amy Quinn from the One Asbury ticket. That gives me the security of the experienced Council and the hope of new and innovative changes from an opposing viewpoint.
