Upper Deck Shuffleboard Club Launches At Convention Hall
Grand Opening set for 6 p.m. Friday, w/Tues Family Nights beginning July 4
No need to wait for hitting the deck on that cruise, Asbury Park boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette is launching Upper Deck Shuffleboard Club on Friday.
Located on the northern upper level of Convention Hall [1300 Ocean Ave] above Anchor’s Bend, the new shuffleboard club “promises to luxuriate with leisure turning the pastime favored by septuagenarians into the next ping-pong amongst the beachfront set,” spokesman Adam Nelson said.
The 6 p.m. Friday grand opening will feature the ‘yacht rock sounds’ of Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and Toto spun by World DJ Video award-winner Atom Worth. A food and drink menu will be available.
This is how it works:
Each session lasts for one hour.
Reservation are not necessary.
But participants should book one of four courts with the ‘Court Captain’ upon arrival.
Spectators are welcomed but will not be permitted on the deck area.
Tickets cost $10 per person, per hour.
Play is open every day except Tuesday, which is Family Night and is open to all ages.
“Shuffleboard has its roots in a 15th-century English game called shovel board, which, along with beheading his former wives, was a favorite pastime of Henry VIII,” Nelson said. “Its modern form arrived on American shores in the early 20th century, aboard transAtlantic liners popular with the blue-rinse brigade whilst whiling away their time.”
The Upper Deck will run noon to close Saturday and Sunday. Starting Fourth of July Weekend the Upper Deck will be open noon to close seven days a week, with Family Nights beginning July 4.
