‘Vicious’ dog shot after biting officer, cops say
Owners charged with municipal violations
A dog was shot dead after it bit a police officer on Monday, Police Chief Mark Kinmon has said.
On Jan. 7 just before 3 p.m., police headed to the area of Ivy Place and Ridge Avenue after receiving a report of a “vicious dog running wild,” Kinmon said. At the scene, the dog charged at the officer and bit him, Kinmon said.
“Thankfully, there was no injury to the officer,” Kinmon said. “He had a book in his pocket and that was bitten by the dog, along with his pants.”
The officer fired his weapon at the dog, but it got away, Kinmon said. The dog was later located in Neptune by other responding officers. The dog was “still aggressive and charging,” Kinmon said, so additional gunshots were fired and the dog later died.
The dog was a German shepherd-boxer mix, according to a report from the Newark Star-Ledger.
The Asbury Park Police Department is investigating the case to ensure those who fired their weapons acted appropriately, Kinmon said.
A summons was issued to the dog’s owner for a municipal dog violation, including owning an unlicensed dog and allowing the dog to run loose, Kinmon said.
This incident is not believed to have any relation to ongoing investigations into an apparent dogfighting ring that was uncovered in November, Kinmon aid.
