Volunteers sought for lake cleanup this Saturday
Commission seeks to remove debris from both Deal and Sunset lakes
The Deal Lake Commission and Friends of Deal Lake are looking for additional help to clean Deal and Sunset lakes on Saturday, Oct. 26.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the Asbury Park boat ramp, on Seventh Avenue across from the 7-11 store at 9 a.m. Anyone who can not make it to the boat ramp at that time but would still like to volunteer can head over anytime before 2 p.m.
“Whatever time people can spend between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m, we’ll have a job for them,” said Don Brockel, chairman of the Deal Lake Commission.
It is suggested folks bring gloves, wear old clothes, shoes or boots, and dress for the weather that day since the cleanup takes place rain or shine.
This will be the commission’s third organized cleanup since Hurricane Sandy rolled through the area just short of a year ago. Brockel hopes this effort will clean up most of the remaining debris the hurricane washed in, he said.
About 80 percent of trash gets caught up near the train tracks that traverse the lake near Seventh Avenue in Asbury Park, according to Brockel. Throughout the day, groups will pitch in to walk around the lake and pick up trash, cut bushes, climb into boats to pickup trash stuck in the lake’s coves and trim trees near Fireman’s Pond.
Deal Lake commissioners began to lower the lake Tuesday in preparation for the cleanup. They encourage homeowners that live along the lake to to chip-in and clean up trash and debris along their shoreline while the lake is low.
“Keep your eyes out for lake treasures like old milk and soda bottles,” he said.
World Volkswagen is the official sponsor of the cleanup. Snacks and water will be provided for those that come to lend a hand.
