Walk To School Day Comes To Bradley Elementary School
City Council Members Help Promote Annual Good Health Initiative
A couple lucky Bradley Elementary Elementary School students had a few special aides during their walk to school Thursday morning.
First-grader Allison Martinez-Valle and preschooler Louis Velasquez-Moreno were the winners of this year’s walk to school day raffle.
A part of the Mayor’s Wellness Committee initiative, the event is organized in collaboration with the Asbury Park School District, Hackensack Meridian Health, and EZ Ride’s Safe Routes to School coordinator Lisa Lee, who also heads the Alliance for a Healthier Asbury Park.
Councilwoman Yvonne Clayton and Eileen Chapman met Martinez -Valle at her Central Avenue home; and Mayor John Moor and Councilman Jesse Kendle met Velasquez-Moreno and his older sister at their Church Street home.
Once at school they were greeted by Board of Education member Barbara Lesinski, Lee, and Hackensack Meridian Health Hopscotch the Moving and Groovin Rabbit.
“An event like this doesn’t last that long but it has a lifetime effect on these kids,” Vice Principal William Wells said.
Healthy snacks, jump ropes, and reflector tags were distributed but hardly drew third-grader Phikai Bellamy’s attention. Instead he had questions for the mayor.
“I asked him if he was going to switch next year and not be our mayor,” the 8-year-old [shown above] said. He also said he spoke to Moor about President Donald Trump.
“I think he might be our mayor someday,” Moor said after spending five minutes speaking with the student.
