Waterfront Permit Parking Only Back On Table In Deal
Board of Commissioners will vote Wednesday on $100 seasonal permit
Permit parking has landed back on the discussion table in Deal, according to a public notice ahead of the 7:30 p.m. Board of Commissioners meeting at the Borough Hall meeting room, located at 190 Norwood Avenue.
An ordinance will be introduced outlining permit parking hours for Monmouth Terrace, Monmouth Drive, Hathaway, Sydney and Neptune avenues. This will be the governing body’s third attempt at mitigating parking in the waterfront area but a grassroots Citizens In Opposition to Beach Restrictive Access [COBRA] is once again gearing up to fight the proposed law.
“This is another attempt to keep people away from the newly replenished beaches, paid for with your tax money,” COBRA member Andrew Chambarry said in a written statement.
The borough introduced similar legislation in October 2015 and June 2016, but both ordinances were tabled.
“Ordinance #1143 is another slap in the face to local taxpayers, given that Deal’s beaches were recently the benefactor of a $40 million taxpayer-funded beach replenishment project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers,” Chambarry said.
The ordinance outlines a 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. permit parking only restriction for the entire length of Monmouth Terrace and Ocean Avenue east to Monmouth Terrace for the remaining roadways. The permits will cost $100 for the season or $50 per month from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.
While no comments or questions will be permitted during the introduction, the public can address the Board of Commissioners during the public portion of the meeting and during the second reading and public hearing, slated for May 10.
