Wendy Williams Returns To Asbury Park
Giberson: Fire Safety Show Taped At Home Of Purple Glaze Owner Jacki Sharpe & Wish Upon A Prom Founder Sherrice Lyles Due To Air On Nov 1
Can someone who has a street named after her and a nationally syndicated daytime television show, sneak into town without a crowd milling about — the answer is an unequivocal no.
Wendy Williams came home Friday to tape a show on fire safety, which is due to air on Nov. 1, Asbury Park Fire Department Spokesman Garrett Giberson Jr said.
And while the show asked for no media presence at the taping, a group of neighbors quickly caught wind of her visit to the home of Asbury Park School District Parent Liaison Sherrice Lyles, who also runs the Wish Upon A Prom annual giveaway.
“I just walked into and was part of a taping of The Wendy Williams Show,” neighbor Lance Nelson posted on his social media page. “I honestly just went out for coffee, lol.”
Nelson said he saw the fire trucks and thought there was an emergency but after deciding to cut through the apparent blockade, he learned that Wendy Williams was inside taping.
Lyles and her family are back home after a hoverboard caught fire destroyed Prospect Avenue rental in August.
I would like to thank everyone that helped me and my family after our recent fire.” she said in a written statement. “Your donations, thoughts, prayers, words of inspirations and cards really helped me and my family get through this together. We finally moved back into our home 10/7/2017. It’s a wonderful feeling to be a part of a loving and caring community. We are truly grateful for your help,”
Giberson, who participated in Friday’s taping, said Williams installed the 1 millionth smoke alarm in Lyles home as part of their collaborative program with the Jersey Coast Red Cross to distribute the smoke detectors to homes as part of an awareness campaign. She also donated $10,000 to help the family, he said.
“It’s really a great program because we need the help getting the message out there that smoke alarms are important,” Giberson said.
Taping was also done at the home of Purple Glaze owner Jackie Sharpe.
“We went over the basics of fire and kitchen safety and the importance of establishing a meeting place after you leave the house,” Giberson said.
And as for Wendy Williams Way, Giberson said the talk show host did get a bit choked up when they drove past her childhood home.
“She’s a very down to earth, people person,” he said. “It was a cool experience but for them it’s a lot of hard work and all about timing.”
As for Nelson, he described himself as an unintentional anarchist for taking a selfie after being advised not to do so.
“I didn’t get to meet her but it was fun being in the crowd,” Nelson said.
