Wesley Lake cleanup takes place Sunday
Efforts will focus on removal of as much floating garbage as possible
[UPDATE: The cleanup, originally scheduled to take place Saturday, has been moved to Sunday, according to the event Facebook page. From the page: “We have decided to postpone until tomorrow. While we wanted to rally and clean regardless of the rain, so many people have been sick lately. We would hate for you to get sick. Tomorrow looks like 61 and sunny!” A link to the page is provided at the bottom of the article.]
Friends of Wesley Lake will host a lake cleanup on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon and seek about 40 volunteers to help with the effort.
Volunteers are asked to meet at the western footbridge on the Asbury Park side of the lake, at the corner of Lake Avenue and Emory Street, according to an event release.
After the cleanup, volunteers will be treated to select beers and pizza at Johnny Mac’s House of Spirits, and receive a coupon redeemable at the upcoming Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten as a thank you, the release stated.
It is suggested volunteers wear gloves, old clothes, shoes, boots, or waders and dress for the weather. Volunteers are welcome to bring gardening tools such as rakes, clippers, brooms to help clean up the grass paths.
Friends of Wesley Lake will provide tools to those who need them. Members of the Deal Lake Commission, including Asbury Park Councilwoman Sue Henderson and Don Brockel, commission chair, will donate bags and lend pickers, rakes and rubber gloves from the commission.
Efforts will focus on the removal of as much floating garbage as possible from the water. Most volunteers will be asked to work from the banks of the lake to skim and pull debris closer to the edge so it can be raked out. If enough volunteers attend, some will be asked to help clear debris from the grass areas around the lake as well.
