Two local teams are strapping on their life jackets and gearing up for a re-match that can’t be missed.
Representatives from the Chamber of Commerce will face off against local dignitaries from the City Council in the city’s Second Annual Pedal Boat Race on Monday, July 30, in hopes of raising money to send local children to camp this summer. The race starts at 6 p.m.
Last year, Team AP Chamber emerged victorious in the swan pedal boats, defeating the city council in the dragon boats. Still, Team City Council is confident they can pull off an upset on Monday.
“Our strategy is just to win,” said Team City Council member Deputy Mayor John G. Loffredo [pictured above, right, at last year’s event with Mayor Ed Johnson] in a phone interview.
When asked if his team would been training in the lead-up to the match, Loffredo said, “No, nope, not necessary.”
He also confirmed Team City Council will ride in the dragon-shaped pedal boats.
Chamber of Commerce Director Jackie Pappas confirmed that Team AP Chamber will also be riding in the same boats as last year.
“The swans were worthy vessels for the win last year,” she said.
The grudge-match will be a relay race with several heats and two riders from each team per boat.
Limited edition T-shirts designed by M Studio will be sold, and the proceeds will help send local kids to summer camp at the Boys and Girls Club.
Members of Team AP Chamber include Jackie Pappas of the AP Chamber of Commerce, Jim DeGilio of FISH Restaurant, Roger Boyce of Interfaith Neighbors, Jenna Zilincar of M Studio, Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini, Jay Harman of Atlantic Architectual Millwork, Matthew Whelan of the AP Chamber of Commerce, and Asbury Park Police Chief Mark Kinmon.
Team City Council will be made up of Mayor Ed Johnson, Deputy Mayor John Loffredo, Councilwoman Sue Henderson, City Manager Terry Reidy and Asbury Park students.
