Windmill reopens Asbury location with new design
Interior upgrades on the menu along with the famous hot dogs, burgers and fries
The Windmill in Asbury is back open for business with interior upgrades to go along with the famous hot dogs, burgers, fries, onion rings and more.
The Asbury Windmill is located on Main Street, at the entrance to the city near Ocean Grove, where it sits on a triangle with its own parking lot.
The site had closed during the pandemic, but the owners were eager to reopen after recommitting to the location with a renovation and redesign.
“We have new counters, a new design,” said Rena Levy, Windmill co-owner. “We committed to reopen it. We feel the people in Asbury deserve to have their own Windmill with their own dedicated parking.”
Aside from repainting and redesigning the inside, the exterior of the building was also repainted “to blend the old and the new,” said Levy.
The Asbury Windmill is the sunniest and most open with windows of the five Windmill locations in the region, with a patio on site for patrons to enjoy outdoor dining in view of Wesley Lake, she said. That makes it special to Levy.
“Asbury has a lot of windows. It gets a lot of sunshine,” said Levy. “It’s got a good vibe when you walk in. It’s a good iteration of the old and the new. It’s nostalgic enough where you know you’re in a Windmill, but it’s newly upgraded enough that you know we’re taking care of it.”
Windmill is open seven days a week, from 10:30 am to 8 pm. The first Windmill was open in 1963 and the Levy family bought the business in the late 1970s. They continue to operate it to this day. The other locations are in the West End section of Long Branch, North Long Branch, Belmar and Red Bank.
The Asbury location also features “beautiful artwork” on the walls by local award-winning photographer Andrea Fox, said Levy.
Levy said her employees in Asbury are excellent.
“It has a wonderfully friendly crew,” she said. “And in this day and age, that means a lot. They’re very friendly.”
In addition, senior citizens love the Asbury location, particularly Wednesdays which is Senior Day with half-priced regular hamburgers and regular hot dogs, said Levy.
