The Daley Practice is officially open in Asbury Park.
The first of a two-part business venture here by husband and wife team Jack and Thea Daley, the yoga studio [above] is located at 625 Bangs Avenue at the corner of Bond Street.
The studio brings Iyengar yoga to the city almost two years after the project received approvals and rehabilitation has been undertaken on the building.
“I started the studio because I felt I needed my own platform down here,” said Thea Daley [left], a former New York City resident.
With over a dozen classes offered weekly, Daley said the Iyengar discipline practiced at her studio fulfills a much needed niche here. While there are at least 14 styles of the discipline, at its core yoga is commonly known to unite one’s mind, body and spirit. Yoga master BKS Iyengar is credited for launching its western popularity during the 1960s and 70s.
According to the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States, the practice develops strength, stamina, concentration, coordination and flexibility by using custom designed tools such as wooden gadgets, belts and ropes.
Daley, a classically trained dancer has been teaching Ivengar Yoga for the past six years.
“I wanted to do something but I’m not a gym girl,” Daley said of her initial interest in health regimen. “I immediately fell in love with it because it was similar to dance in so many ways.”
Daley said she’s noticed a difference in her physical body.
“I’ve always been a thin girl but there was a time in my life when I thought wait a second how did my waist get like this,” she said. “It shifts the shape of your body so much.”
A less tangible but possibly more important benefit came with the ease of balancing a commute to Manhattan where she’s worked for world class ranked hair salons. She also teaches at The Iyengar Institute in New York.
“(Iyengar yoga) really works on the nervous system,” Daley said. “That is just a huge benefit.”
Jack Daley — a long-time professional musician — plans to open a state-of-the-art recording studio under the same roof. Daley had previously told the Sun that he hopes to have the studio open by the end of the summer.
