Mogo secures Friday dates for beach bonfires
Logistical details still need to be worked out
The owners of Mogo, the Korean taco pop-up on the Asbury boardwalk, have received approval to hold beach bonfires every Friday until the end of September.
Their special event application to reserve the dates was passed by the City Council on Wednesday. The vote was 5-0.
When the actual bonfires will start is still up in the air, according to commerce and economic development director Tom Gilmour.
“They wanted to start [this Friday], but I don’t see that happening,” Gilmour said earlier in the week.
Gilmour is currently looking into arranging a meeting between the Department of Public Works, the fire marshall, Mogo owners Jay Devino and Sam Chung and the special events committee to discuss the manpower necessary to transport the firewood to the beach and clean up the debris after the event, Gilmour said.
“What we are going to do is to get everyone together,” said Gilmour. “I think they underestimated the extent of what they had to do.”
Gilmour says he has received over 30 emails from residents inquiring about the return of the Friday night event.
Boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette sponsored the weekly bonfires for the previous four summers. They made a decision earlier this month not to continue the event.
