Republican Sen. Beck won’t back Trump if he’s GOP nominee
Christie should choose between office and campaigning for Trump, she says
Monmouth County Republican Senator Jennifer Beck says that if Donald Trump is her party’s nominee for President she will not vote for him in November or campaign for him.
“I don’t care what party you are, your first job is to do the best for the people you represent,” said Beck [right], whose district includes Asbury Park, Neptune and Ocean Township. “I feel I would be doing a disservice to those I represent by getting behind Donald Trump.”
“People are angry and frustrated with Washington and their state, and I understand why he can tap into that,” said Beck. “But his temperament is not suitable for the position of President of the United States.”
Beck first went to Trenton as a state Assemblywoman in 2005 and moved up to the state Senate in 2007. She faces reelection next year.
Asked if she was concerned by Trump’s candidacy doing damage to the Republican Party, Beck said that wasn’t a big issue for her. Rather, it’s that Trump doesn’t have the experience, knowledge or temperament to handle the complex international relationships and domestic demands of being President of the United States, she said.
Beck also took issue with fellow Republican Chris Christie being absent from the state to campaign for Trump, whom the New Jersey Governor endorsed last week.
Christie should resign his office if he wants to campaign extensively for Trump, Beck said. Otherwise, he should come back to New Jersey. “Being Governor of New Jersey is a full-time 24 hour a day, seven day a week job,” she said.
Campaigning for another candidate full time is different than Christie wanting to become President, which would have been of great benefit to New Jersey if he won, said Beck.
“This is different,” she said of Christie’s out-of-state campaigning for Trump.
