Gas Main Leak prompts Emergency Evacuation
APPD: 100 to 200 residents in Langford and Mattison neighborhood notified
Asbury Park Police and Fire departments assisted in an emergency evacuation of residents in the area of Langford Street and Mattison Avenue Tuesday night.
The evacuation was sparked by the reported 7:39 p.m. natural gas leak caused by contractors working in the area, Asbury Park Police Department spokesman Patrolman Michael Casey said.
“Contractors working at the location struck a gas main, causing a significant leak,” Casey said.
While the leak caused no fire or reported injuries, an estimated 100 to 200 people were notified, Casey said. EMS buses were brought in to provide shelter and warmth but as of 9:30 p.m. it was still unknown when residents would be able to return to their homes.
“The leak was still active as of 15 minutes ago,” Casey said near 9:30 p.m.
